PIXERA allows full control of the color workflow. The Render Engine runs a 16-bit floating point back buffer which offers full flexibility to adapt to all circumstances.
WARNING
The Render Engine cannot write metadata – thus the output metadata can be wrong. In this workflow, it is likely that the LED processor shows SDR metadata although PIXERA is sending a HDR Signal.
It is crucial to force the receiving device (Monitor, Display, LED Controller) to HDR10. Since PIXERA does not send metadata, it is essential that the receiving device interprets the stream correctly.
PIXERA Color Settings
HDR Workflow
In Settings/Color/HDR Workflow you will find a variety of settings.
For HDR10, change the Clipping Value (Lower) to -1 and the Clipping Value (Upper) to 12.5. PIXERA's back buffer is a 16-bit floating point buffer and thus has enough resolution to cover that range.
Past this value, the user can decide what is the maximum value of White on the outputs.

In Preview Tone Mapping you can adjust the preview of your HDR content.

Color Space
In Settings/Color/Color Space you can set the default Color settings for the different processing steps (Intermediate, In, Out, Preview, Timeline Export).

Intermediate: Defines PIXERA's internal working color space that the Render Engine uses for image processing - essentially what color space the Render Engine is operating in. It is also the Color Space used between Fades.

In: Incoming sources color space, such as media resources/clips and Live Inputs.

Out: The Output color space from PIXERA.

Preview: The color space of your GUI or Preview window.
- Timeline Export: The Transfer Characteristics that would be applied if you were to export your Timeline as a video.
Best practice is to set In to Defined by Media and Out to BT.2020 & SMPTE ST 2084 (PQ).

Finally, each of these categories contain two components:

Primary Chromaticities: Defines the color gamut, or the range of colors that can be represented (for example, sRGB, Rec.2020).

Transfer Characteristic: Defines how brightness (luminance) is encoded and interpreted (for example, sRGB, PQ).
TIP
Make sure the PIXERA detected color format of the content is interpreted correctly. There are certain formats which do not transport this information correctly or at all (e.g DPX).
PIXERA’s color workflow checks if there is a difference between the Input in comparison to the expected Input. Further, it checks if there needs to be a manually forced change of the color profile.
For example, if all color settings are set to BT709 (Intermediate, In, and Out) PIXERA does not apply any changes even if the real input format is BT2020. Based on those settings, PIXERA knows that throughout the processing no change should happen.
When In settings are different from Out settings, PIXERA applies changes to meet those requirements.
Open Color IO
In Settings/Color/OpenColorIO you can choose Color configs from different manufacturers.

WARNING
Do not forget to use the Distribute Config Files to Clients button, otherwise they are not able to be displayed.
After loading the OCIO file it is possible to load the color profiles which come with this Configuration file. Make sure, to keep the same consistency with what is being received.
When using OCIO, it is advisable to change the Intermediate Color Space in the settings to linear.

Clipping Values do not need to be changed when using OCIO files.
Content Color Space
It sometimes happens that PIXERA does not detect the Color Space correctly. Thus, manual input is required.
By selecting a Resource, the Color Space can be set in the Inspector.

Make sure, the expected Color Space and the Detected/Set Color Space are correct.
You can also change the Color settings in Mapping/Live/Output/Color Space individually for each output.

WARNING
Do not change the HDR Modes setting on Outputs in PIXERA, it is unneeded in all supported versions.
Mix of HDR and Non-HDR Content
If you are mixing HDR and Non-HDR content on an Output, you can adjust the colors for the Non-HDR Content if you enable Use SDR to HDR Scaling on the Resource.

In the PIXERA Settings you can Adjust the HDR Compensation of Non-HDR Content.

Outside PIXERA Setup
LED Controller
It is important to set up the LED Controller to the same settings so that it sends back the correct metadata.
WARNING
As mentioned in the introduction, PIXERA does not write and send out correct metadata, thus a correct configuration of the LED processor is mandatory.
NVIDIA Settings
10-Bit in Nvidia must be setup, the 10 Bit Workflow Article goes over this setup.
Final Checks
Back in PIXERA, you can now assign your output. Activate it with F5, the Activate All Outputs Button, or with the Active checkbox on the Output.

Activate the Output identification to check if PIXERA is running on 10bit.

Now you will see on your Output the On-Screen Statistics data.

Next to the Output Resolution you can find the Color Depth information:
- 8 bpc = 8-Bit
- 10 bpc = 10-Bit
- bpc = bits per colour
Normally PIXERA should switch automatically to 10-Bit mode.
Force 10-Bit in PIXERA
There is also a way to force the Render Engine to playout 10-Bit if the above is not working automatically.
To do so, modify the file -:
C:\ProgramData\AV Stumpfl\RX\user_settings.lua
- by adding to it the following code using a text editor after the first line:
context_settings.color_bits = 10
Turning off and on On-Screen Statistics should now show 10-bpc like the On-Screen Statistics screenshot.
