Web Browser Resources

The use of Web Browser Resources in PIXERA allows complete web pages, such as Youtube, or self-created web pages to be placed as a Clip in the Timeline and displayed via the RenderEngine (RX).

Web Browsers can be very advantageous for interactive installations to display content dynamically over a pre-programmed webpage.

The following video explains this workflow. It also shows how it is possible to display the mouse in the render engine to interactively trigger buttons in a web page, for example.

CEF

PIXERA uses the Chromium Embedded Framework (CEF) to render web content. CEF is an embedded version of the Chromium browser engine, meaning that web pages are not opened in an external browser, but are rendered directly inside PIXERA as part of the rendering pipeline.

NOTE

Each server loads its own CEF instance independently.

Due to this isolated behavior, true synchronization between multiple CEF instances is technically not possible. Content Mapping or Perspectives are also unable to work around this issue.

The only way to achieve consistent visual Output across servers would be to abstract the content and distribute it as a single texture, e.g., via NDI.

Also while PIXERA can trigger simultaneous playback via JavaScript, this will not result in actual frame‑accurate sync.

Workflow

A Web Browser Resource can be created in two different ways:

  1. By clicking the WWW icon in the bottom bar of the Resources Tab.

  2. By using the context menu via right-click on the folder where the Resource should be created.

When a Web Browser Resource is selected, all relevant settings are available in the Inspector on the right-hand side.

  1. Name: The Web Browser Resource's name.

  2. Browser - URL: The URL of the page to be displayed.

  3. Resolution: Sets the Resolution for the Web Browser Resource to render at.

Interaction

Once the URL and resolution have been set, the Web Browser Resource can be dragged onto the Timeline and that page should appear in both the Preview and the Output.

In order to interact with the Web Browser Resource using the mouse cursor, the Hide Mouse Cursor option must be disabled. This setting can be found in the Mapping tab under the Live System, by opening Engine Settings/Edit Render Settings within the Inspector.

JavaScript

JavaScript code can also be executed within a Web Browser Resource and interacted with via PIXERA.

Further information about this workflow is in the article JavaScript in Web Browser Resources.
